Important information

The LUME - TEDxMelbourne event begins at 6pm.

There will be staff and hosts to welcome you at the main doors of The LUME… the TEDx volunteers will be wearing their TEDx branded T-shirts.

In your email you will have received a QR code for your entry ticket. Once the staff scan your entry ticket, you will go through the doors (labelled Door 18).

After you enter through the doors, there are two rooms to explore prior to entering the main hall. In the first room there is a display on Leonardo DaVinci and the second room displays some of his notebooks.

Upon entering the main hall, you will be greeted by another volunteer and they will give you an option on where to sit.

Be sure to mention any special needs at this point, this may include:

  • Needing to be further away from speakers
  • In a darker section of the seating plan away from bright lights.
  • Near an isle should you wish to exit unexpectedly.
  • Request information on the quiet room
  • Ask about the nearest facilities (bathroom, water fountain, exit to the outside)

The main hall at LUME Melbourne – grab a bean bag and lay back and enjoy.

Toilets:

If I need the bathroom while I am inside THE LUME, I can find it in the corner of the gallery across from the cafe.

Sensory overwhelm:

There are multiple rooms off to the side of the main hall where the light and sound are reduced.

If I can’t find it, I can ask one of the staff to point it out to me.

The event goes for 2 hours in total and will finish at 8pm.

At the end of the event, follow the EXIT signs and you will be directed through the retail store.

Executive functioning assist

The part of our brain that helps us to get stuff done is called our executive functioning. This part of the social story is for anyone who may struggle to get out the door and be on time. You will know if you need this section:

Getting organised for the event:

What to bring with you:

  • Wallet
  • Phone
  • Ticket (if not on your phone already)
  • Note pad and pen for writing down all the amazing ideas you will hear about
  • Noise cancelling headphones
  • Fidget tools
  • Medical care related needs

Planning and time management - getting to the event on time:

Public transport and walking from local areas:

  • The event is a 10-minute gentle stroll from the Crown Casino/MCEC tram spot on Clarendon Street.
  • Factor this into your planning for the event.
  • Aim to be arriving at the Crown/MCEC tram stop at 6:30pm.
  • This allows for the 10-minute stroll and 20 minutes for finding where you need to go it’s not completely obvious if you have not been there before (see photos below), going to the toilet, and finding your seat with ample time to relax before the event begins.
  • Allow an additional 10- 15 minutes if coming from Flinders Street station, dinner at Southbank or at Crown Casino.

Driving

  • If you are heading to the TEDxMelbourne event at LUME by car, there are many local options to park your car:some text
    • DFO South Wharf car park – the closest car park to the LUME and offers $14 evening rates for parking.
    • Montague Street Car park - Enter and exit via Montague Street – cost is $16 for more than 1 hour (casual rates).
    • Stress tolerance/ flexibility/emotional control – Driving into Melbourne city can be unpredictable and stressful, here are some strategies:some text
      • Pre-book your parking at one of the above car parks or another car park you have used before and feel familiar with.
      • Use your favourite maps app to predict time how long it will take. Do this on a Sunday night prior to the event to get a sense of how long it will take you – estimating time during non-peak times will less helpful on the day.

Uber/Taxi

  • Both will be able to drop you in front of door 18 where the event is being held with very little walking involved.
  • Image: Taxi/Uber drop off zone – Convention Centre Place (of Wurundjeri Way)

Look out for the TEDxMelbourne signs to help guide you to the event.

Emotional control/sustained attention:

LUME is an immersive experience, where there is art all around you. The images move and change.

Sensory overwhelm considerations in this environment:

  • Motion sickness – from the constant moving of images – note there are side galleries that you can move into and a mezzanine area if this is affecting you.
  • Noise sensitivity – the music is beautiful, and the music is loud. This will be temporary while the event gets started.
  • Light sensitivity – The light level changes during the rotation of images being projected onto the walls.

Wheelchair Accessibility:

THE LUME Melbourne is suitable for strollers and is wheelchair accessible. Please click here for more information on accessibility at the MCEC.
